There is no easy way to say it. Local golden boy Tom Petters is in a lot of trouble. Every day we get up there is another headling indicating that Petters Group was nothing more than a Ponzi scheme.

A federal judge today determined that Petters has the resources and ability to leave the country with or without a passport, and has subsequently not allowed to leave Sherburne County jail, located in Elk River. Judge Keyes, preciding over the hearing, decided that Petters could not be allowed to be remanded to his home in Wayzata with or without a monitoring device on his ankle.

According to several media outlets, Magistrate Jeffrey Keyes cited a taped conversation with Petters and Robert White that occurred on October 1, a couple of days before his arrest. Apparently Petters planned to use White’s boat to escape, and planned on taking his girlfriend and children with him.

In a significant financial setback, Sun Country Airlines, owned by Tom Petters’ The Petters Group, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The airline faced a severe cash crunch following the FBI raid on Petters’ business headquarters and home.

Petters, a local prominent businessman, has been arrested on charges of mail and wire fraud, money laundering, and obstructing justice.

The Petters Group, founded by Petters, oversees operations such as Polaroid, Fingerhut, and Sun Country Airlines.

The bankruptcy filing reflects the financial challenges triggered by the legal turmoil surrounding Petters, marking a substantial fall from grace for the once-respected entrepreneur.

Tom Petters‘ residence in Wayzata on Bushaway Road, overlooking Wayzata Bay and near the Gray’s Bay Bridge, is also within the legal storm.

The Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing adds another layer to the complex narrative surrounding Petters’ legal troubles, emphasizing the broader impact on his business ventures, including Sun Country Airlines.

In a surprising turn of events, Wayzata resident Tom Petters, once hailed as a private company stalwart in Minnesota for his acquisitions of Fingerhut, Polaroid, and Sun Country Airlines, is set to step down from his corporate empire.

The upheaval began when Federal Agents executed a raid on Petters’ Minnetonka corporate headquarters last week, concurrently seizing his computer from his Petters’ Wayzata residence.

The unfolding saga reached a critical point as a recently unsealed search warrant disclosed that Petters is under investigation for potential involvement in fraudulent investment activities amounting to an estimated $100 million.

News broke yesterday that Petters will be relinquishing control of his companies, with plans underway to implement an interim management solution through the hiring of an external firm.

Minnetonka, MN — In a synchronized effort, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), collaborating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, executed a raid on the Petters Group headquarters in nearby Minnetonka today.

Confirmation of the raid was relayed by a credible witness who reached out to our news desk.

The witnessed indicated there were multiple agencies involved including the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, IRS, and U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which underscores the gravity of the situation.

While the specifics of the investigation remain undisclosed, the multi-agency involvement suggests a thorough assessment of the Petters Group’s corporate activities.

This is a developing story.
