“The Wayzata boys and girls Nordic ski teams each won titles at the Section 6 championships Monday in Bloomington. Daniel McCollor of Wayzata won the boys’ pursuit race while the Trojans Audrey Parham was the girls’ champion. Wayzata and Armstrong finished 1-2 in the boys’ team standings, both qualifying for state. Wayzata and St. Louis Park are the girls’ team state qualifiers. Logan Drevlow of Hopkins finished third in the boys’ meet with Boden Sundell, Noah Breker, and Alex Omodt of Armstrong all finishing in the top seven. Liam Urbanowicz of Hopkins placed eighth with Parker Dietrick and Daniel Gladlov of Wayzata finishing ninth and tenth. Other local top ten finishers for the girls include Grace Wermerskirchen, Lila Golomb and Emma Freed of Wayzata and Daphne Grobstein of Hopkins. The Wayzata boys Nordic ski team placed fourth at Friday’s state meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The result was somewhat of a surprise as the Trojans went into the meet ranked #1 in the latest poll.
The Trojans amassed 344 points as a team, which put them behind champion Forest Lake (380), second place Hopkins (362), and third place Duluth East (355).
Wayzata senior Kasey Bacso placed fourth individually in the pursuit standings. Bacso recorded the second best time in the classical race with a 16:03, but lost some time in the freestyle race when he recorded a 15:03.
Sam Lozano was the Trojans second best skier on the day as he placed 49th in the pursuit standings. Jonathan Griwac finished in 59th place, and Alex Meyer rounded out the top four for the Trojans by placing 64th.
Girls Take 6th
The Wayzata girls Nordic ski team placed sixth at the state meet with 310 points. Burnsville took home the team title with 378.5 points.
Paige Schember was the top skier for the Trojans as she placed 16th in the pursuit standings with a combined time of 36:46.
Amanda Leone placed 44th, Maddie Lambert took 66th, and Megan Bubchuk rounded out the top four for the Trojans by placing 81st.

Orono (ranked 6th in state) scares Wayzata (ranked 1st in state) as they go into the skate race up 6 points. Wayzata comes back to win the meet by 4 points over Orono. Both the boys and girls Nordic ski teams from Wayzata will participate in next week’s state meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik after both teams won their respective section two meets on Thursday, Feb. 5.
The boys narrowly defeated Orono by a score of 375-371. Senior Kasey Bacso posted the best time in both the freestyle and classical races, and therefore placed first in the pursuit standings with a combined time of 29:25.
Senior Jonathan Griwac finished fifth in the pursuit standings, while sophomore Joshua Blankenship and junior Alex Meyer placed 11th and 12th respectively.
The girls had a slightly larger cushion in the team standings as they defeated second place Maple Grove by a score of 381-366.
Like Bacso, junior Paige Schember posted the top times in both the freestyle and classical races to finish first in the pursuit standings with a combined time of 36:19.
Junior Amanda Lenoe placed sixth, junior Maddie Lambert placed seventh, and senior Meagan Bebchuk placed ninth to round out the top four finishers for the Trojans.
The state meet is Friday, Feb. 13.

The #1 ranked Wayzata boys Nordic ski team will take part in the section 2 race Thursday, Feb. 5 at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. The Trojans’ biggest competitor at the meet will likely be the Orono Spartans who were ranked sixth in the latest state poll.
The Trojans are led by senior Kasey Bacso who is the number one ranked individual in the state. Bacso beat the rest of the field by 40 seconds at the Classic Lake Conference championships on Jan. 29. Senior Jonathan Griwac also had a strong performance at the CLC championships by placing third. Other skiers expected to contribute at the section meet include sophomore Joshua Blankenship, senior Sam Lozano, junior Nathan Engel, and junior Alex Meyer.
The other teams in section 2 are Buffalo, Elk River, Maple Grove, Rogers, St. Cloud Apollo, St. Cloud Cathedral, St. Cloud Tech, St. John’s Prep, and Willmar.
If the Trojans qualify for the state meet it will be held on Friday, Feb. 13 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
