The Wayzata boys hockey team picked up a 4-3 victory over the Hopkins Royals Thursday night in Classic Lake Conference play. The win moves the Trojans to 3-4 in conference play and 15-8-1 overall.
The Trojans built a 4-0 lead by the end of the second period and then had to hold on for dear life as the Royals came charging back with three goals in the third period.
Juniors Danny Walsh and Scott Holm got the Trojans started early with a pair of first period goals. Senior Matt Straate scored midway through the second period to make it 3-0, and when senior Kevin Blackley scored with just 53 seconds remaining in the period to make it 4-0, it looked like the Trojans had the game wrapped up.
But the Royals got two goals in the first 5:12 of the third period to apply some pressure to the Trojans. The Royals then got within a goal when senior Tom Plotkin scored with 2:02 remaining in the game, forcing the Trojans to sweat it out over the final two minutes.
Wayzata’s senior goaltender Ty Simcoe made 25 saves in the victory. Alex Fons made 28 for the Royals.
The Trojans will finish up their regular season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 21 when they host Robbinsdale Armstrong at 2:30 p.m. Then it will be on to the section tournament which begins Tuesday, Feb. 24.
