When Wayzata senior Matt Straate (pictured) scored just 17 seconds into the Trojans’ Thursday night battle against Minnetonka, some in attendance might have been expecting a high-scoring affair.
But with five minutes left in the third period, Straate’s goal was still the only score of the game. Just when it looked like the Trojans might hold on for a 1-0 victory, the Skippers tied the game with a goal by senior Pete Carbonneau with 4:56 remaining in regulation.
After the game went to overtime, it took the Skippers’ Sam Coatta only 30 seconds to end things. Coatta’s team-leading 15th goal of the season handed the Trojans a heartbreaking 2-1 loss – their third straight defeat.
Trojans goaltender Ty Simcoe made 32 saves in the loss. The Trojans are now 11-6-1 on the season and 0-2 in Classic Lake Conference play. They will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 when they host the Hopkins Royals at 2:30 p.m.
