The Dakota Rail Regional Trail had a successful grand opening event on Saturday, June 20, according to Jason McGrew-King of the Three Rivers Park District.
Community residents participated in a 5K run and enjoyed the new trail by biking out to Gale Woods Farm for farm activities.

The Dakota Rail Regional Trail grand opening will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, June 20, in Mound.
The celebration will include activities for kids, historic highlights of the former rail corridor and refreshments. Anyone who rides their bike to Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista before noon, will be able to join activities for free. There will also be a 5k run/walk that will begin at 10 a.m. in Mound and will travel west on the trail to Gale Woods Farm.

The Three Rivers Park District is hosting a grand opening celebration on June 20 for The Dakota Rail Regional Trail, the 13-mile paved bike trail that runs between Wayzata and St. Bonifacius.

The Dakota Rail Regional Trail grand opening will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20 in Mound. The celebration will include activities for kids, historic highlights of the former rail corridor and refreshments. If you ride your bike to Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista before noon, you can join activities for free. There will also be a 5k run/walk that will begin at 10 a.m. in Mound and will travel west on the trail to Gale Woods Farm.
The path begins at a trailhead near Wayzata Beach (pictured bottom left) and travels 13.5 miles west and south through Orono, Minnetonka Beach, Spring Park, Mound, Minnetrista and St. Bonifacius.
The trail was built on a former railroad that was historically used to carry tourists to resort hotels near Lake Minnetonka. The railway was later extended to Hutchinson and used to carry freight. The recent construction of the trail has extended it to St. Bonifacius, and Carver and McLeod counties are expected to eventually extend the trail to Hutchinson.
The trail will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and welcomes non-motorized use.

Hi Jeannie,
That’s a great question. I was over at City Hall and all the girls at the front desk said in a questioning tone, “Shaver Park?”. So I went and did some investigation on my own. The real name Three Rivers Park District gives the Wayzata/St. Boni trail is the Dakota Rail Regional Trail. I drove down Lake Street, took a left on Ferndale, and an immediate left on Grove lane. The top picture here is right by the Wayzata Marina and next to the Boat Works. The bottom picture is at the corner of Grove Lane and Ferndale. Have fun Jeannie!
