Get ready for a musical journey through time as the Minnetonka Choral Society gears up to present their much-anticipated “Holiday for the Ages” concert. This festive celebration will showcase a captivating blend of timeless classics and contemporary twists, promising an enchanting experience for all.
Unraveling the mysteries behind beloved holiday melodies, the choir will bring to life the origins of timeless tunes. Dive into the origins of “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” crafted by an English priest in France, who, due to language barriers, composed the lyrics in Latin. Fear not, as the Minnetonka Choral Society will deliver this classic in English, ensuring a delightful connection with the audience.
The concert will feature not one but two renditions of the enchanting “Coventry Carol,” one from 1591 and another from 1913. As if that’s not intriguing enough, the program will also include a carol boasting 4th-century text, 16th-century music, a 20th-century translation, and a late 20th-century arrangement — a true amalgamation of centuries in a single musical masterpiece.
Stepping into the realm of modern holiday magic, the Minnetonka Choral Society will delight audiences with selections from the likes of jazzy maestro Dave Brubeck and the soulful stylings of Bobby McFerrin. Adding a touch of contemporary flair, the choir will also present a jazz-based rendition of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” in honor of the poem’s 200th anniversary.
Prepare to be swept away by the widest variety of seasonal songs ever presented by the Minnetonka Choral Society. With a repertoire spanning centuries and genres, this concert promises to be not only a musical feast for the ears but also a heartwarming celebration of the holiday spirit. Don’t miss your chance to experience what may just be the merriest holiday concert of the season!
