Age 87, of Plymouth, MN. Passed away August 24, 2011.
Survived by wife, Edna; daughters, Kirsten Johnson and Lisa (Philip III) Fortin; sister, Carol Cofey; grandson, Christian Esping Fortin(Jill); and great granddaughters, Kaya Hazel and Mia LaRue; and many friends.
Don was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Don’s education included a Bachelor’s of Arts in mathematics and physics from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL in 1948, and a second Bachelor’s of civil engineering from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA in 1949. Don also attended the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL from 1945-47.
Don’s career began as a design engineer with Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corp., New London, CT, where he contributed to the design and building of the first nuclear powered submarines, The U.S.S. Nautilus and the Sea Wolf. Don led the non-destructive testing department at Twin City Testing from 1971-1989.
Don’s career led him to develop his own company, Esping Forensic Engineering. His career also included working for the Naval Intelligence, the F.B.I. in cities across the country in structural investigations and failure analysis.
A memorial service for Don will be held on Saturday August 27, 11 AM at Peace Lutheran Church, 3695 Highway 101 North in Plymouth with a visitation beginning at 10 AM.
Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
