A Young Scientist Roundtable will be held Monday, March 7, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Central Middle School. Dr. John Delaney will present “Wiring an Interactive Ocean”. Delaney is a professor of oceanography at the University of Washington and is also the director and principal investigator for the regional scale nodes program.
The oceans make our planet livable, yet they are largely unexplored and poorly understood. Delaney is an advocate of next-generation ocean science, which is made possible through the distribution of robot-sensor networks in the oceanic environment. These networks enable real-time, interactive research on the natural phenomena operating throughout the world’s oceans. Delaney will discuss his work at the University of Washington as principal investigator and director of the regional scale nodes program, which is constructing an innovative, cabled network of instruments in the northeast Pacific Ocean. This event is a rare opportunity to meet an oceanographer celebrated for working with cutting edge technology to understand the watery frontiers that surround us. A Teen Roundtable will be held from 8:10 to 8:40 p.m. where students will have the opportunity to ask in-depth questions.
The Young Scientist Roundtable is free for students in grades K – 12 and their families and no registration is required.
