Wayzata Community Church to hold rummage sale Aug. 19 and 20

The Wayzata Community Church will hold its annual rummage sale Aug. 19 and 20.
Donations go directly to people in need, and the net proceeds go to outreach.
The first sale was started in 1921 by the Ladies Aid Society, the predecessor of the present Women’s Fellowship and Ministries, according to the Church’s Web site.
Since then, the sale has grown to taking up most of the rooms on the Church’s first floor plus tents on the Church grounds during the week of the sale. Last year, the sale brought in $180,000.
“It raises a pretty significant chunk of cash,” Mission Outreach Board member Scott Reath said.
Church publicity volunteer Pat Halsten said the money goes into a grant fund.
“People apply for grants and we give them money,” Halsten said. “It doesn’t stay in the Church, so it’s not a typical church fundraiser.”
Grants are given as either money or “gift in kind,” which is a grant of merchandise.
“It’s a cool deal,” Reath said. “We do an awful lot of good things.”
