The athletic department at Wayzata High School will have to make room for one more trophy in the trophy case this week after the boy’s golf team captured the Class AAA state championship on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans had two players shoot one under par rounds of 71 on Wednesday to lead them to a five stroke victory over second-place Forest Lake.
Wayzata senior Blake Vettel shot a 37 on the East course at Bunker Hills and a two-under par 34 on the West course for a 71. Vettel finished in a tie for third place individually after he shot a 78 during Tuesday’s first round.
Wayzata junior Kyle Beversdorf started the day in the middle of the pack after shooting a 79 in the first round, but his 71 on Wednesday earned him a tie for fifth place individually.
Senior Andy Stahlman followed up his 75 on Tuesday with a 78 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 11th place.
Seventh grader Jack Holmgren turned in a key performance for the Trojans on Wednesday as he turned in the team’s fourth best score with a 79. Holmgren’s score on Wednesday was important because senior Matt Thompson and sophomore Kyle Lowenstein both struggled in the second round with scores of 87 and 88 respectively.
Eden Prairie, who led after Tuesday’s first round, fell back to third place on Wednesday after rounds of 75, 77, 78 and 82.
