WAYZATA BASEBALL 2009: Trojans Lose Third Straight

By Matt Thomas, Wayzata.com Sports Reporter

After winning five of six games from April 27 through May 6, the Wayzata baseball team appeared to be on a roll at just the right time. But a recent three game losing streak has turned things in the other direction with just two regular season games remaining to right the ship.

The Trojans suffered a disappointing 9-2 loss to the Hopkins Royals on Tuesday afternoon to drop to 9-9 overall. One positive note is that the Trojans are still tied atop the Classic Lake Conference standings with the Royals at 7-4.

The Royals were able to get to Trojans ace Billy Soule in the early innings to take control from the get go. Soule – who came into Tuesday’s game with an earned run average under one – lasted only two and one third innings. The Royals touched him for four hits, two walks and five runs – two of which were earned runs.

Senior Lucas Steinbach and junior Zack Trygstad both went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Trojans in the loss. Steinbach is now 8 for his last 13 to raise his season batting average to .362. Trygstad is now third on the team in hitting with a season average of .367 and first on team in RBI’s with 21.

The Trojans will attempt to snap their three game losing streak and secure at least a share of the Classic Lake Conference championship when they host Robbinsdale Armstrong on Wednesday, May 13 at 4:30 p.m.
