WAYZATA SOFTBALL 2009: Trojans Extend Win Streak to Five

By Matt Thomas, Wayzata.com Sports Reporter

The Wayzata softball moved to 5-2 on the season with an important 2-1 victory in nine innings against Classic Lake Conference rival Hopkins on Monday afternoon. The win was the fifth in a row for the Trojans after they had started the season 0-2.

Senior pitcher Anna Twinem went the distance in the pitching circle for the Trojans by going all nine innings, surrendering only four hits, walking three, and striking out 11. Twinem has now given up only seven earned runs in 48 innings pitched for a season earned run average of 1.31.

Sophomore Meg DuPuis went 1-3 at the plate with a walk and one of the two runs batted in for the Trojans. Junior Chloe Rod went 1-2 at the plate and knocked in the other run for the Trojans.

While DuPuis and Rod were the offensive spark plugs on Monday, senior Nina Ferguson is hitting the ball better than anyone on the team. Through Monday’s game against Hopkins, Ferguson is hitting an even .500 with 12 hits in 24 at bats. She has four doubles, one triple, six RBI’s, and has struck out only twice.

Senior Allie Siu is also off to a strong start with 10 hits in 25 at bats for a .400 batting average. Siu has two doubles and five RBI’s on the season. Senior Sarah Laudner has also been an offensive threat with a .318 batting average and six RBI’s to tie for the team-high with Ferguson.
The Trojans will look to extend their winning streak to six games on Wednesday, April 22 when they host Edina at 4:15 p.m.
