The Wayzata boy’s golf team took on a challenging 24-team field at the Tri-State Invitational over the weekend at the Les Bolstad University of Minnesota Golf Course.
The Trojans, with a team score of +34, took second place, just two strokes behind the team champions from Forest Lake (+32). Other Classic Lake Conference teams that participated included Minnetonka (+45, 5th place), Hopkins (+61, 10th place), and Edina (+97, 23rd place).
Blake Vettel turned in the best individual performance for the Trojans with a four over par 75 in Friday’s round one, and a two over par 73 in Saturday’s final round to finish in a tie for tenth place.
On Saturday, Vettel birdied the sixth, seventh, and ninth holes to finish the front nine at one under par. He also birdied number 15, but took bogeys on 12, 14, 16, and 17 to play the back nine at three over par.
Wayzata’s Andy Stahlman shook off a disappointing round of 79 (+8) on Friday and came back with an even par 71 on Saturday to finish in 16th place. After shooting a two over par 37 on the front nine, Stahlman birdied holes 10 and 18 and sandwiched seven straight pars in between for a two under 34 on the back nine.
Kyle Beversdorf tied for 17th place at +10 with rounds of 77 and 75. Jack Holmgren tied for 25th place at +12 after rounds of 78 and 76. Matt Thompson rounded out the top five for the Trojans in a tie 65th place at +18 after rounds of 77 and 83.
