The Wayzata boys hockey team defeated the Robbinsdale Armstrong Falcons for the third time this season and the second time in six days in a section 6AA quarterfinal game on Thursday, Feb. 26. The 4-0 victory means the third seeded Trojans will face the second seeded Minnetonka Skippers in a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Bloomington Ice Garden.
The game went scoreless for almost two entire periods, but the Trojans lit the lamp three times in a 1:56 span near the end of the second period to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
Senior Kevin Blackley started the scoring splurge with a goal with 2:28 remining in the second period on assists from junior Lucas Whelan and senior Billy Soule.
Just 48 seconds later, the Trojans made it 2-0 when senior David Russ scored on an assist from junior Danny Walsh.
Then with just 32 seconds remaining in the second period, the Trojans extended their lead to 3-0 when Whelan scored on assists from Soule and sophomore D.J. Jones.
Junior Scott Holm added an empty net goal in the third period to make the final score 4-0.
All four of the top seeds in the section are through to the semifinals. Top seed Eden Prairie and fourth seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s will meet in the other semifinal.
