Wayzata Walk for Water meets $5,000 goal

Some local Wayzata High School students have recently received recognition in the local media about raising funds for water purification equipment. Members of the Youth Extending Services (YES) club, at WHS, had volunteered to walk to school with the goal of raising $5,000 for Lake Soluton Elementary School in South Cotaboto province in the Philippines. A large contribution from The Supreme Master Ching Hai of $3,000 put the students very close to meeting their goal.

According to the Wayzata Public Schools website, “Hai is a humanitarian leader that has been recognized for her work around the world and in the U.S. Her organization is not religious and her mission is to save sentient beings from misery.”

The goal, $5,000, has been met according to Chris Olmanson of the Walk, “As of today [01/25/2009], we have raised $5,107 for Lake Soluton Elementary School in the Philippines. This will be enough money to bring to them a brand new water system so that they will not have to waste their time every day walking to get water and will instead be able to put that time into furthering their education.

Thank you to everyone for your tremendous support!”

Wayzata Walk for Water blog indicates that:

· Every 15 seconds a child dies due to lack of access to clean water.
· Women and children can spend 60% of their day walking to collect water
· 4,500 children a day die due to unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation
· Without access to latrine, girls stop going to school once they reach puberty

With this fund raising campaign, Wayzata Walk for Wayzata has made a big impact on this remote school. A very heartfelt congratulations to Wayzata Walk for Water.
