Where Are They Now? Wayzata Graduates Playing College Athletics

Many Wayzata High School graduates are currently playing college athletics at the Division I, II, and III levels. Here are a few former Trojans making an impact on the collegiate level.

Kurt Davis is a former Trojans hockey standout who graduated from Wayzata in 2005. Davis has become one of the top defenseman in the WCHA at Minnesota State, Mankato. Davis currently leads the Mavericks in scoring with five goals and a team-high 21 assists. He is ninth in the WCHA in scoring and third in assists.

A trio of former Wayzata hockey stars are currently members of the No. 6 ranked University of Minnesota men’s hockey team. Tony Lucia has played in all 22 games and has scored four goals and five assists. Kevin Wehrs has played in 18 games and has four assists. Joey Miller has two goals in eight games.

James Laurinaitis recently finished his four-year career at Ohio State University. The Buckeyes football team posted a 43-8 record during Laurinaitis’ four years. The linebacker was named an All-American in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Scouts, Inc. currently has Laurinaitis ranked the 22nd best available player in the 2009 draft.

Ben Vanderheyden, former wide receiver for the Trojans’ football team, is now a standout receiver for St. John’s University in Collegeville. Vanderheyden led the Johnnies in receiving this past year with 46 receptions, 798 yards, and six touchdowns. The Johnnies won a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament where they lost in the first round.

Grant Fossum, former basketball star at Wayzata is a senior at Minnesota State, Moorhead. Fossum is the Dragons second leading scorer at ten points per game. He is shooting 43 percent from the field, 41 percent from three point range, and 84 percent from the free throw line. He leads the team in steals and is third in assists.

Wayzata graduates Christina Lee and Liz Orke are both members of the Minnesota State, Mankato women’s hockey team. Lee leads the Mavericks in scoring this season with ten goals and 12 assists through 22 games. Orke has played in 18 games and has one goal and three assists this season.
